Queer 101: A Primer for Psychotherapists Working with GLB Clients March 13, 2009

Coming out represents an enormous shift in one's identity, consciousness, and relationship to others. It is often set against a painful matrix of a homophobic society, complex family systems, and religious dogma. Feelings of isolation, shame, and inadequacy can lead to negative self-perception, addictive behaviors, and an inability to maintain healthy relationships. Same-sex couples struggle to sustain emotional and sexual intimacies over time. Lesbians and gay men are large consumers of individual and couples counseling. Many psychotherapists are ill-equipped to work with gay and lesbian clients in a culturally sensitive manner. In this workshop, we will define "integral care" in the queer community and teach psychotherapists how they can serve gay and lesbian clients with sensitivity, skill, and grace. Both beginning and experienced psychotherapists are welcome to attend.

Connie Hills, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in San Francisco where she treats individuals and couples, including samesex couples. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies in 1998.

Richard Buggs, PhD, has been a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in San Francisco for 10 years. His specialty area is treating gay men individually and as couples. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies in 1996 and completed his postdoctoral work at UCSF Center for AIDS Prevention Studies. He has also worked at the National Institutes of Health, where he focused on psychosocial issues affecting gay men diagnosed with HIV.
