You may or may not know but the month of Domestic Violence Awareness is October. This concept evolved from the First Day of Unity (October 1981) by the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women's advocates nationwide working to end violence against woman and children.
To commemorate this moment in time, PWAP is hosting a Domestic Violence Event on the campus of Spelman College entitled Purple Reign. We are partnering with local advocates and community-based organizations including, but not limited to, Partners Against Domestic Violence (PADV), Women's Resource Center, True Love Movement and Men Stopping Violence from Atlanta.
This event will be held on October 27, 2009 from the 6pm to 9pm. It a semi-formal event where attendees will be encouraged to wear the color purple as it represents Domestic Violence Awareness. We have an array of activities scheduled to create awareness and celebrate life including food, live music, and a theatrical production depicting a young lady facing and overcoming abuse. We will also have poets and motivational speakers giving actual testimonies regarding their experiences with Domestic Violence to include keynote speaker, Johnnetta McSwain. Additionally there will be a reception that will host a number of organizations present to provide attendees with literature and information regarding domestic violence awareness, prevention and intervention. Purple Reign will prove to be an experience that won't soon be forgotten!
