Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf

In addition to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf the program includes Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, the “Chanson du Toreador” from Bizet’s Carmen, Suite No. 2, and the third movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Isabelle Wong of the Denver Young Artist Orchestra, soloist. An ensemble of local harp students performs Linda Wood’s Processional and Susan McDonald’s Toccata, “Sabre Dance” (Boren arr.) with the orchestra.


The Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra performs at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 8 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2100 Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood and at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 9 at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 E. Alameda Ave., Denver. Tickets are $5-$10. Join the musicians in a special post concert “petting zoo.” The instrument “petting zoo” offers an opportunity for kids to talk with the musicians and touch their instruments.


Charley Samson is the host, writer and producer of KVOD’s Colorado Spotlight. Charley's radio career began at station KADX in Denver, and he spent 19 years at classical music station KVOD. He has written program notes for dozens of orchestras nationwide, including the Colorado Symphony and the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and he serves as host for performances of the Arapahoe Philharmonic and the Denver Brass. Charley received his BA from Regis College, his Master's Degree in Music History from the University of Northern Colorado and, for several years, was on the music faculty of Metropolitan State College of Denver.


Musica Sacra is well known for its engaging repertoire, which encompasses chamber orchestra music from the Baroque to the avant-garde. The orchestra proudly presents many regional premieres of the works of living composers. The musicians of the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra bring a rich diversity of training and performing experience to the ensemble, gained through their solo performances and membership and leadership positions in a variety of ensembles.


Catherine Sailer, conductor, received her Doctor of Music in conducting from Northwestern University where she studied with Robert A. Harris and Mallory Thompson and was awarded the Kenneth G. and Helen C. Merrill scholarship. Her B.M. and M.M. degrees are in piano performance and choral conducting from the University of Denver. Catherine Sailer was awarded first place in the ACDA conducting competition in 1999. In 2005, she was named the winner of Chorus America’s prestigious Robert Shaw Conducting Fellowship. She has conducted nationally and internationally and collaborated with William Warfield and Marilyn Horne and conductors Victor Yampolsky, Marius Szmolij, Stephen Alltop, David Amram, and Tan Dun.
