Thayer Tolles, Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture
In 2009, the Metropolitan opened its renovated Charles Engelhard Court, a soaring atrium-like space in the American Wing that has long been a favorite with museum visitors. First opened in 1980, it houses American monumental sculpture, stained glass, and architectural elements on its main level, as well as small decorative arts--silver, ceramics, and glass--on the balconies above. This tour will introduce participants to the substantive architectural changes and installation decisions, in particular focusing on the new configuration of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century marble and bronze sculptures by such masters as Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French.
These intimate tours are led by distinguished Museum curators and have limited availability.
Tuesday, November 9, at 11:00: $300
Luncheon will be served with each tour.
