The department's holdings of more than 50,000 works dating from the 1880s to the present constitute the most comprehensive collection of modern prints and illustrated books in the world. Individual artists as well as art movements are found in both range and depth. Techniques represented range from traditional woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and screenprints to newer processes such as digital printmaking. Among the unique strengths of the collection is the inclusion of numerous states of many important prints, demonstrating the artists' creative processes.
