When After Comes Before is an art exhibition organized by Columbia College Chicago’s Anchor Graphics that features the time-focused works of artists Phillip Chen and Tomas Vu.

According to art historian Wu Hung, any artifact of the past has to exist in the present. In the works of Chen and Vu the opposite is also true. Their artifacts of the present exist in the past. Drawing from personal experiences, memories and written history Chen and Vu’s work incorporates both long departed and surviving traditions, beliefs, objects and landscapes, positioning all firmly within a contemporary context.

With the use of computer-controlled technologies, innovative laser-cutting techniques are combined with old-school hand printmaking. Chen and Vu’s work is at once a document and a schematic diagram of the present as seen through the past and the past as seen through the present.
