Initially inspired by the geographic juxtaposition between Beacon Arts Building and stadium venue The Forum in Inglewood, Prince at the Forum utilizes the potential for slippage of meaning in the exhibition’s title to allow for a pluralistic voice from an array of artists working in different media, modes and concepts. In developing the exhibition, the organizers considered the ancient Roman forum, the complex social histories of The Great Western Forum, and the definition of “beacon” as something that has potential to both summon and warn off. Taken from the headlines of a religion-filtered concert series performed by Prince in 2011, the exhibition’s title gives way to the exploration of a broad range of dualistic themes such as site/nonsite, past/present, power/weakness, chastity/desire, and vulgarity/taste. The works being produced for the show are totally interdisciplinary and will include drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance, and collaborative works.
