Some of history’s most powerful couples are so well known that we only need first names to identify them – Isabella and Ferdinand, Frida and Diego, Josephine and Napoleon. These husband and wife teams changed the world around them, shaping the fates and fortunes of millions in the process. In this course, five local experts will examine the lives of several premier couples, touching on the forces that brought them together and the imprint they left on the people in their sphere of influence as well as those far beyond.
From the charismatic Evita and Juan Perón who governed mid 20th-century Argentina with a mixture of generosity and tyranny, to Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England who expanded English rule over much of France and produced two future English kings, to Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, two of Victorian England’s greatest literary figures, this course will explore numerous intimate details of the relationships and contributions to history of these renowned couples.
Eight Wednesdays, March 14-May 2. For details, lecturers, registration and fee information, see the Rice GSCS website.
