Post-Classical Ensemble explores the dramatic impact of the American experience on two major immigrant composers. Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera epitomizes his scathing Berlin style, while his wartime Walt Whitman Songs (an American orchestral premiere) are breezy Broadway ballads. Arnold Schoenberg's Ode to Napoleon, composed in English, is a grateful wartime tribute to FDR.
Joseph Horowitz and UM film historian Saverio Giovacchini will conduct a pre-concert discussion, "Fritz Lang and Fury: Hollywood's Impact on Germany's Foremost Filmmaker," at 2PM in the Center's School of Music Room 2200. There will also be a TalkBack session immediately following the performance.
