So you want to be a fine art photographer? We probably all know the typical approach: Make artwork. Develop portfolio. Write artist statements. Create website. Research galleries. Send out slides. Send out portfolio. Wait. Repeat.

However, what really works and what isn't so effective today? Do people still look at portfolios? What about on-line galleries? How important is your website? Why won't anyone talk to me on the phone?

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy to be a fine art photographer, but for those of us who truly want to be one, it seems we can use every bit of good advice we can find.

Join us for a discussion with a knowledgeable, experienced panel that knows what it's like in the trenches.

Mark Citret-Mark received his M.A. from San Francisco State and is a faculty member of UC Berkeley Extension and UC Santa Cruz. He was selected by UCSF to document the construction of the massive Mission Bay biotech campus. His book, Halcott Center, a Catskill Mountain Valley , was published in 2004. Mark's work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, SFMOMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Center for Creative Photography.

Linda Connor-Using the tools reminiscent of 19th century landscape photography, Linda creates images that reflect the poetry and mystery of the places she photographs. Linda has been living in the Bay Area and teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute for the past 35 years. She has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad and has been published in numerous books, journals, and catalogues.

Cay Lang-Since receiving her M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute, Cay's work has been exhibited in museums in Paris, London, Osaka, Montreal, and Toronto. Articles about her work have been published in numerous US and international publications and anthologies. She has taught at UC Davis and SFSU, among others. She founded the Taking the Leap program and wrote Taking the Leap: Building a Career as a Visual Artist .

Heather Snider-Heather is currently a freelance curator and writer specializing in photography. Prior positions include: Director of Scott Nichols Gallery, Director of Vision North Gallery, and staff member of Vision Gallery. Recently, she published a survey of South African photography for B&W in June, 2005, and curated a show of same at Toomey Tourell Gallery in July and August, 2005. She is on the board of SFCamerawork and the Chinese Artist Network.
