This course will present a detailed study of the personality, life, and achievement of four outstanding figures of the Middle Ages and Renaissance: Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Becket, Thomas More, and Erasmus of Rotterdam. Beginning with Hildegards outstanding writings and music, created in the Rhineland of 12th century Germany, the course will then explore the extraordinary and turbulent career of Thomas Becket in 12th century England. The writings and career of Thomas More, one of the great humanist scholars and politicians of his era, will then lead into the Renaissance era, and the course will conclude with an in depth consideration of the outstanding secular achievement of Erasmus, the greatest humanist scholar of his time.
