Winner of last year’s Kreft Competition show, artist Pooneh Maghazehe returns for a solo exhibit. Born into a Shiite Muslim family of Iranian descent and raised in Philadelphia, Maghazehe explores the delicate balance between bi-culturalism and assimilation in a combination of embroidery, all-American hot iron branding, Amish fashion, hipsters in leather, sacred Islamic numerology, and gangsta-bling. At its core, her work responds to and adapts the tendency for the human psyche to subscribe to specific categorizations, or subcultures, in response to feelings of ambivalence, uncertainty and/or anxiety.
