In Japan, as in the West, classical themes from poetry, literature, and plays have long provided fodder for artists. A selection of Japanese woodblock prints derived from such a canonical repertoire is currently on view in the Asian Galleries. This exhibition is drawn exclusively from the museum's permanent collection and is co-organized by UCSB students under the direction of Tatiana Ginsberg of the Department of the History of Art and Architecture.
