C.S. Lewis is famous throughout the world for his seven Chronicles of Narnia but he was also a professor of English at the University of Cambridge. As an academic, Lewis was fascinated by the Copernican Revolution, when the old picture of a cosmos centred on the Earth was replaced by the modern view of the Earth and the other planets orbiting around the Sun, and by the imaginative effects of this scientific advance. Inspired, he constructed his Narnia books out of the imagery associated with the medieval heavens in an attempt to give the 'seven planets' of medieval cosmology a continuing life in the modern imagination. In this talk Dr Michael Ward, author of the acclaimed book 'Planet Narnia', reveals Lewis's life-long interest in the sky at night and the secret inner meaning to this much-loved series.
