Intersection and WritersCorps have been collaborating on this multigenerational reading series since 2004. In the first of a three-part reading series, writer-teachers and youth poets from WritersCorps share the stage with some of our most esteemed literary icons. Influential author and speaker Piri Thomas (Down These Mean Streets, Seven Long Times, Stories From El Barrio) joins us.
Originating from a 2002 Intersection reading pairing together WritersCorps writer-teachers and youth poets with legendary fiction writer Tillie Olsen, where readers ranged in age from 7 to 91 years old, this current series explores the themes and styles of writing across three different generations - writers in their teens, writers in their 30's & 40's, and writers who have been impacting the Bay Area community for decades not only through their published work, but also through their teaching, mentoring, and advocacy of transformation through literature. Writers featured in the series to date have included Diane di Prima, Jose Montoya, devorah major, Al Young, Ruth Forman, Al Robles, Francisco X. Alarcón, Jack Hirschman, and Cherrie Moraga. 2007 features Piri Thomas, Jaime Jacinto, George Evans and Daisy Zamora.
WritersCorps, a project of the San Francisco Arts Commission, places professional writers in community settings to teach creative writing to youth. Since its inception in 1994, the program has helped over 12,000 young people from neighborhoods throughout San Francisco improve their literacy and increase their desire to learn. WritersCorps publishes award-winning publications and produces local and national events featuring young people. The program is part of a national alliance with sites in the Bronx and Washington, D.C., whose shared vision is to transform and strengthen individuals and communities using the written word.
