Saturday, November 3rd I.M.U. presents PINK FLOYD ANIMALS & ECHOES TRIBUTE w/ WINDOWS '78, ARCTIC & JAPANESE COWBOY @ The Backstage Lounge on Granville Island (1585 Johnston St.) . 9pm, $10
PINK FLOYD ANIMALS TRIBUTE - From their first Syd Barrett-led psych-pop record to their concept albums and elaborately presented live shows of the 1970s, Pink Floyd were space-rock pioneers who reached unprecedented heights of commercial and aesthetic success. PINK FLOYD ANIMALS TRIBUTE performs the entire ANIMALS album, which was released in 1977 and inspired in part by George Orwell's classic novel, "Animal Farm," with Waters' anthropomorphizing humanity to show the dehumanizing side of capitalism. ANIMALS divides humans into three categories -- dogs, pigs and sheep -- and features each classification in song. The dogs are merciless opportunists, grasping for success at any price; the pigs are pathetic, self-righteous tyrants; and the sheep are the mindless followers, being used by the dogs and pigs.
WINDOWS '78 dynamically explore a unique fusion of moody, guitar-driven rock and ambient electronica, delivering an innovative sound that appeals equally to humans, Martians and robots. Described as "somewhere between Spiritualized and Pink Floyd" (The Province) and "a new successor to the mantle of melancholy modern rock" (Prairie Dog), their CD "The Window Seat" showcases the premier space rock act as they craft a rich, evocative sound that weaves together melodic guitar lines, subtly deployed electronic loops and masterful playing.
ARCTIC conjures up a rich live experience by recording live guitar loops and constructing each song before the audience. Layers of haunting melodies cascade on top of richly improvised arrangements, with intertwining vocals and guitar melded into a chilled and airy soundscape.
