EMMY AWARD WINNING

PILOBOLUS AT MARIN CENTER

Where: Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium, 10 Avenue of the Flags at Civic Center Drive in San Rafael, CA

What: Formed in 1971 out of the creative exploration of the founding members during a dance class at Dartmouth College, Pilobolus Dance Theatre is renowned for its nontraditional, imaginative, and athletic exploration of dance. The company has taken part in three Olympics opening ceremonies and received worldwide exposure in 2007 when they performed during the Academy Awards and molded, folded, and shaped their bodies into the iconic silhouettes evoking the year’s films. The program for the Marin Center performance includes Redline (2009) which examines the beauty and futility of physical battle, accompanied by a driving and seductive score by Battles and Autechre, Dog• ID (2009) shadow piece in which a young woman is transformed, Gnomen (1997) one of Pilobolus' classic men's quartets, which lyrically explores emerging relationships using an unusual and inventive physical vocabulary, Duet (2009) a fast duet about love's path, marriage and nostalgia, and Day Two (1980) one of Pilobolus's classic works which enacts the second day of the creation of the world.

More: Pilobolus has received a number of prestigious honors, including the Berlin Critic’s Prize, the Brandeis Award, the New England Theatre Conference Prize, and a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in cultural programming. In June 2000 Pilobolus received the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement in choreography and in 2004 the company was featured on CBS 60 Minutes. In 2007 Robby Barnett, Michael Tracy and Jonathan Wolken received the Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Endowment Fellowship from Dartmouth College.
