After studying painting and sculpture at the Art Students' League of New York, Dan Budnik built a career as a photographer for Magnum Photos -- a photo cooperative that provides photographs to the press, publishers, advertising, television and museums and galleries -- and documented many seminal 20th-century artists. In addition to his well-known, intimate photographs of American sculptor David Smith, Budnik photographed Helen Frankenthaler, Willem de Kooning, Georgia O'Keeffe and Roy Lichtenstein, among others. This exhibition pairs a selection of Budnik's dye-transfer photographic prints with works by the depicted artists from the Kemper Museum's permanent collection.
