The Picture this…film festival guarantees to engage, educate, entertain and maybe even enrage you during three days of film screenings at a disability-friendly venue La Joie De Vivre, 1008 - 14 Street SE. This international film festival is the nation’s first and largest disability film festival with over 15 countries participating including Israel, Bangladesh, Scotland, Poland, Ireland and Greece. This year 80 entries were submitted.
The Best of festival went to the film After life. Jury Comments include:
“…creative…professional production…great story of relationships…emotional tension…excellent editing and story…audience develops emotional investment in the characters…direct and pertinent topic…entertaining with an unusual shocking twist…top quality…sensitive, realistic, engaging…very well structured…”
Other award winners include Radio Bhai a Bangladesh/U.K feature-length production and Nothing like her, a short animation film from Nova Scotia. Three documentary films shared awards including Sparkle, a story about a young man’s alter ego, Life’s a twitch, a great way to learn about Tourette Syndrome and Carts of darkness with its impactful insight into homeless folks.
In the drama category Nuts for pudding, What it’s like to be my mother and After life took top honours. In the educational category Germ academy and Getting it right were recognized. Lastly in the performance category, Like each day was your last was the winner.
In addition to the film festival held in Calgary, Picture this…film festival also tours to Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and to rural areas in Alberta. Picture this...film festival, in conjunction with the Calgary SCOPE Society, maintains a lending library which can be accessed through contacting our office and requesting specific films.
