Brilliant American pianist Jon Nakamatsu performs a solo recital Wednesday evening, March 14, 2007 at 8 p.m. in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. Mr. Nakamatsu who has been praised for his cultivated and artful playing, presents an intriguing program which includes the New York premiere of Danses Fantastiques by Armenian-Iranian composer Loris Tjeknavorian (who celebrates his 70th birthday in 2007) along with more traditional fare such as Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Liszt.
Mr. Nakamatsu came to international attention in 1997 when he was named Gold Medalist of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the only American to have achieved this distinction since 1981. Nakamatsu, who at the time was a high school German language teacher without formal conservatory training, seized the Van Cliburn jurors and audiences with the polish, musicality, and technical brilliance of his playing—the result of many years of private piano study starting at the age of six.
