If we think of the work of a photo-journalist as being like that of a documentary film maker, the studio photographer is more like the director of a feature film, where an entire world is created from scratch. But unlike a film production, a studio photographer combines many roles: photographer; director; production designer and lighting technician.
In the role as the production designer, the studio photographer decides on all the ingredients that need to be in the frame, but it is the lighting which brings the imaginary world of the studio photograph to life.
In this workshop rather than thinking about lighting as a technique, the participant will think of lighting as the means to shape their imaginary world: it will be primarily be considered as way in which a studio photographer articulates their vision, and for its expressiveness in relation to this objective.
