This course is for young beginners who want to learn what goes into making a photograph distinct and compelling utilizing the traditional black and white darkroom process. Students use their 35mm film cameras to create images while focusing on elements of exposure, composition, lighting, film developing, printing, and use of subject matter. Emphasis is placed on the development of self-expression and a portfolio.
Students learn basic black and white printing techniques, and using fiber-based paper, compose a portfolio of traditional black and white prints. Previous knowledge of photography is not required.
This summer intensive meets Monday-Thursday for two weeks. Class time is split between lectures, shooting, lab time, and critiques. Students will be required to complete shooting assignments outside of class.
