Phoenix Zoo: National Elephant Day September 22, 2009

First 25 guest to report to the elephant exhibit get to assist hiding treats for the elephants
7:00 – 2:00
Elephant barn side door will be open for public viewing of elephant husbandry
7:00 – 2:00
Public can assist with piñata making
9:30 a.m.
Elephant creature feature and carrot toss
11:00 a.m.
Live music for the elephants

Elephant shower

Elephants receive piñatas

You can also bring the elephants a gift from their wish list, including Home Depot/Lowe's gift cards, video surveillance cameras or a Bobcat tractor!

The Phoenix Zoo has three female Asian Elephants:
Indu – born in Thailand in 1965, and weighing in at 9, 075 pounds Indu is the oldest and largest of our elephants. She moved to the Phoenix Zoo from another zoo in 1998. Indu enjoys finding and eating food her favorites include melons and bananas. You can tell her apart from the other elephants by the large amount of pink pigmentation on her ears.

Reba – born in Asia in 1970, and weighing in at 8, 675 pounds, Reba is in the middle of both age and weight of our 3 elephants. She moved to the Phoenix Zoo in 1999 and is retired from the circus. Reba enjoys playing in the water the most of our elephants. You can tell her apart from the others by the large amount of pink pigmentation around her eyes.

Sheena – born in India in 1971, and weighing 8, 055 pounds, Sheena is the youngest and lightest weight of our 3 elephants. She moved to the Phoenix Zoo in 2000 and is also retired from the circus. Sheena is a very clever elephant when it comes to figuring out the puzzles she receives, she is also sometimes a bit shy. You can tell her apart from the others by the large amount of hair on her head and back, she is also the tallest of the elephants.
