Shakespeares plays reflect the ferment of the post Reformation world. New ideas of human nature, the rise of science, the conflict between the bourgeois individual and the old feudal order of rank and duty, are played out in the complex psychology of his characters and their social and political problems. We will firstly consider the most prominent philosophers of the period, and then consider the ways in which their ideas influenced Shakespeares society and his plays.
