The theme of flourishing (and happiness) has been an important one in the history of western philosophy from Plato and Aristotle to Boethius, Kant, Nietzsche, Russell and Singer, among others. Film-makers have not been slow to respond to the challenge in films like 'The Hobbit', 'La Dolce Vita', Les Misrables', 'Gangs of New York', 'Lincoln', 'Amour', 'Russian Ark' and 'Skyfall', among others.
