A number of existentialist philosophers stressed the courage to be, in influential and unforgettable ways. This relates to anxiety, fear, even panic, but also to courage, freedom, authenticity and other such things, in the context of being or of the threat of nothingness - or in the words of Tillich, in terms of acts of courage in which we affirm the power of being, whether we know it or not. The courage to be is also a matter fundamentally of our own self-affirmation and transformation. In this fully illustrated day course we will explore this important notion further and its many expressions in modern film with reference to masterpieces such as The Gold Rush, Seven Samurai, La Dolce Vita, The Life of Brian and Vertigo as well as more recent unforgettable films such as The Truman Show, The Matrix, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Tree of Life, among many others.
