Many philosophers from Socrates and Plato to Kant, Rousseau, Locke, Nietzsche, Russell, Nozick and Rawls, have reflected profoundly on freedom, autonomy and liberty. Many filmmakers in turn have not been slow to explore some of these ideas in film in quite unforgettable ways. We look carefully at the connections with reference to classic films such as The Birth of a Nation, Singing in the Rain, Casablanca, The Bicycle Thief and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest as well as highly regarded recent works such as The Deer Hunter, The Age of Innocence, Braveheart, Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Drive and the Star Wars series.
