Many philosophers from Plato, Aristotle, Boethius and Augustine to Nietzsche, Heidegger, Russell and Ayer, among many others, have reflected on the relationship between good and evil. It is not uncommon to see a number of their ideas, for example, on virtue or excellence and on the nature of good and evil, represented in popular film. One need only think recent films like Inception, Robin Hood, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Inglourious Basterds, the Star Wars series and No Country for Old Men, as well as unforgettable classics like A Touch of Evil, Fanny and Alexander, The Shining, Taxi Driver, Psycho, Salo, Schindlers List and The Good the Bad and the Ugly. We shall explore the relevance and force of these ideas in modern cinema.
