The question of the relationship between appearance and reality is an enduring one among philosophers (and among film-makers), and it is arguably more important than ever in light of the dramatic emergence of the Internet and the accelerating impact of virtual reality on our lives. We focus on the question, and its answers, in the work of Plato, Aristotle and Bacon, Kant and Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and explore the impact of this thinking on notable films including LAge dOr (Bunuel/Dali), Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau), The Rules of the Game, Tokyo Story, Persona, Some Like it Hot, Dr Strangelove, Apocalypse Now, The Matrix trilogy, Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight and Captain America (2011).
