Phillip Johnston And The Coolerators October 4, 2008

Phillip Johnston, the saxophonist, composer and arranger of jazz and new music who has been a significant figure in New York’s underground music scene, is coming to Riverside Theatres. PHILLIP JOHNSTON AND THE COOLERATORS will present their particular style of music at Riverside Theatres on Saturday 4 October at 7.30pm for one performance only.

"Our repertoire ranges from Beatles tunes, through lesser-known blues and jazz classics, to original tunes of undefinable provenance; that is to say, from popular music to wildly unpopular music,” said Phillip Johnston. “A good time will be had by all."

Johnston has composed extensively for film, theatre and dance works in the US and Australia. His silent film score for F.W. Murnau’s Faust (1926) with lyrics by Hilary Bell premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2002, has subsequently toured throughout Europe and the USA, and recently had its Australian premiere in Sydney. He moved to Sydney in 2005 and formed The Coolerators with Sydney jazz musicians Alister Spence, Steve Arie and Toby Hall. The Coolerators’ repertoire ranges from originals to unexpected cover tunes (Lennon/McCartney, Randy Newman) and from blues to calypso. They have been called “the party band for intellectuals.”

Johnston has composed for films such as Paul Mazursky’s Faithful and Noise by Henry Bean. His theatre composition credits include Measure For Measure, War Of The Roses, The Comedy Of Errors, The Merchant Of Venice and Macbeth for Bell Shakespeare. Phillip’s recordings include Tales From the Cryptic (Winter & Winter) with Guy Klucevsek and Seven Men in Neckties & Surrealistic Swing (Cuneiform), a four-CD retrospective of his work with the Microscopic Septet.
