Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra presents
A Genie and the Sun God - 9/15/2006, 8:00 pm
Handel - Apollo e Dafne
Rameau - Orchestral Suite from Zais
Christine Brandes, soprano
William Berger, baritone
Nicholas McGegan, conductor
When conductor Nicholas McGegan first worked with Philharmonia in 1985, he chose Handel's pastoral cantata Apollo and Daphne--a lavish and dramatic tale of the Sun God's love for a beautiful nymph. Now, over twenty years later, Nic returns to this tale to inaugurate PBO's 2006-07 season, pairing it with an exuberant depiction of Zais, Genie of the Air, by the French master Rameau. This program combines mythical tales, the wit and eloquence of two of the Baroque era's greatest composers, and the ebullience of the Maestro conducting two of his favorite composers. A winning combination!
