“Phantoms at the Opera is a new Halloween extravaganza offering gay partygoers the option of an indoor venue,” states Charbel Aoun, one of the Three Witches. “This ghostly gala will include an “orange carpet” arrival photo-op, the masterful spinning of DJ Neill Macleod, a costume contest, stage entertainment, plenty of eye candy and a shuttle service from the gay village to the venue.”
May the best costumes win…Costume pre-judging begins at 10:30pm with a panel of judges including CBC daytime talkshow hosts Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman, and CTV’s etalk correspondent Traci Melchor. Sponsors have generously donated fabulous prizes to inspire and reward the costume makers’ artistry. Dust off your sewing machine, for a chance to win:
• A round-trip for two to Las Vegas including airfare and hotel with Air Canada Vacations
• A round-trip for two including Business Class seating between Toronto and Montreal courtesy of VIA Rail Canada
• A one year membership to Eclipse Fitness
• Adidas sportswear, IPhone 3G from Rogers, Levolor blinds and much more.
“With Phantoms at the Opera, we are returning to our roots,” adds Aoun “When the freemasons lost control of the Masonic Temple at Yonge and Davenport in 1994, Toronto’s gay community lost a Halloween tradition. The temple had been home to a much-loved costume bash that showcased the brilliant creativity and endless imagination of the community. Traffic would slow down and circle the block to catch a glimpse or snap a photo of the aliens, monsters, glammed-up drag queens and whacked-out creatures that lined the cement steps in front on the historic building. It was a great party where everyone dressed up and left their everyday selves at home. Alter egos laughed and danced with a sense of adventure and abandon that could only be achieved behind a feathered mask or a pound of theatrical make-up.In recent years, Halloween for Toronto’s gay community has become an informal promenade on Church Street which attracts more spectators than costumed revellers. Join us at Phantoms at the Opera and bring your creativity in out of the cold!”
