PENNY-ANTE and the EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL present:

PENNY-ANTE THREE with performances by:

JAD FAIR & LUMBEROB
In 1974, with his brother David, Jad Fair co-founded the lo-fi alternative rock group Half Japanese. Over the ensuing three decades, Half Japanese released nearly 30 records, and in the process, attracted a solid base of fans passionate about the bands pure, unbridled enthusiasm for rock and roll. Jad also performs and records as a solo artist, and occasionally collaborates with such musicians as Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, Moe Tucker (of Velvet Underground), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelly and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), John Zorn, Kramer, and more.

Jad's talent for album cover design (he designed many of Half Japaneses and all of his own solo album covers) led Jad to a second career as visual artist. His simple, joyous drawings and intricate, complex paper cuttings are shown in galleries around the world. Books of his artwork have been published in the U.S., UK, Germany, France and Japan.

Jad Fair will perform, accompanied by artist/musician, Lumberob from Brooklyn.

URINALS
Influential punk rock band, The Urinals hail from Southern California and are known for their minimalist approach to songwriting and recording... Their lyrics at times referred to as "punk haiku". The band has influenced countless punk rockers of the 1970s and 1980s including the Minutemen. The bands first off-campus show was at Rauls in Austin, Texas. Returning to L.A., they appeared with such groups as The Go-Gos and Black Flag. A roughly-recorded, four-song EP followed. After developing a somewhat more sophisticated sound, the band changed its name to 100 Flowers (inspired by Chairman Mao's famous quote), but disbanded in 1983.

In 1996, the band reformed as the Urinals, releasing a CD of new material in 2003. In 2005, they performed at the Chaoyang International Pop Festival in Beijing to much acclaim, in what is believed to be the first punk rock performance in China[1]. Their songs have been covered by the likes of The Minutemen, No Age, Yo La Tengo, Gun Club and more.

MANS ASSASSINATION MAN
Conversant cavemen tent in crude & concrete abodes among the eastern landscapes of Hollywood, California the men of Mans Assassination Man they are. Alluvial fans of X-chords lay jagged the taut estuaries of heavy metal and punk rock into a synergy of euphonious non-notes. Ginn ground through Kriegers Jack LaLanne Juicer. Healthy attitudes exude from the Faulkner-cum-Flesheater rantings of the lyrically-reinforced lead singer. Chunks form rhythms into heaps of reducto absurdom.

Readings by:

MICK FARREN
During his long, checkered, occasionally hallucinatory and sometimes hell-raising career, Mick Farren has published over twenty novels that range from the psychedelic fantasy of The DNA Cowboys Trilogy, to the neo-goth vampirism of The Renquist Quartet, and the far future militarism of Their Masters War. An unreconstructed rock & roller [credits include 60s proto-punk band The Deviants and countless solo material], Farren continues to function as a recording artist and songwriter, with more than a dozen CDs to his credit and cult followings in the US, Europe, and Japan. Although an Englishman by birth and inclination, he currently resides in Los Angeles where he comments on media and related conspiracies.

LARRY FONDATION
Larry Fondation is the author of the novels Angry Nights and Fish, Soap and Bonds, and of Common Criminals, a collection of short stories. His fiction focuses on the Los Angeles underbelly. Another story collection, Unintended Consequences, will be published in July 2009. His two most recent books feature collaborations with artist Kate Ruth. Fondation has lived in LA since the 1980s and worked for fifteen years as an organizer in South Central Los Angeles, Compton, and East LA. His fiction and non-fiction pieces have appeared in a range of diverse publications including Flaunt (where he is Writer-at-Large), Plastique, West, Fiction International, Night Train, Quarterly West, the Los Angeles Times and the Harvard Business Review. He is a recipient of a 2008-09 Christopher Isherwood Fellowship in Fiction Writing.

EXPOSURE OF PROCESS (CURATED BY DAWN KASPER)

With performances by:
COREY FOGEL, DAWN KASPER, YASMINE KITTLES, JASON WALLACE-TRIEFENBACH

"Process oriented art is art that is created by physically marking or representing gradual changes that lead toward a particular result. Any material may be used in this form of representation be it by words, actions, props, instruments, sampled sound whatever is necessary to get the point across. At any given time this process and these materials are exposed as tools that are used in constructing a mainline to an action fundamental to a direct stream of conscious or improvisational action. An attempt at taking the current moment, molding time and space and cultivating a visual representation. The artists of EXPOSURE OF PROCESS are interpreting the moment as the moment occurs and directly marking that moment with an action. Although very much idea oriented. Borderline to the point of conceptual yet not void of the actual imagery used to show these actions intended.

Yasmine Kittles reaches out to the viewer with truth, raw power and noise to present visual displays of self. Dawn Kasper uses words, actions and mundane objects to create experiments with in which to prove or disprove the exposure of emotions for what they really are. Corey Fogel uses percussion to activate the room. He shapes and molds the air around him by building structures of noise. Jason Wallace Triefenbach sings songs as personas of the many different people he creates telling tales of what once was and what could be.

Nothing is hidden here. There are no smoke and mirrors. No wizard behind the curtain. With EXPOSURE OF PROCESS and these four artists involved you get what you get. It is what it is. The process exposed as it happens. Only what is necessary to that given idea or moment will translate to the viewer. It is by no means surface. These artists are challenging the intellectual surface structure while building its foundation to a new at the same time."
