The Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington, D.C. (LGCW) will be joined by pop and jazz song stylist Suede, the “Diva la Difference,” for its winter 2007 concert “Peace by Piece,” a diverse program of choral works dedicated to the theme of “waging peace” in the world.
The concert, which is sponsored by Hoopla Traders and Capitol Hill Bikes, will be held at the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church, 4th Street and Independence Avenue, SE, on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 8:00 P.M., and on Sunday, January 28, at 4:00 P.M. Celebrated for her “unstoppable spirit and moxie,” as well as her “pure, clear, marvelously musical voice,” Suede brings her incomparable vocal interpretation to performances of “We Are,” “Never, Never Land,” “Cherish Your Doubt,” and “Peace by Piece.” The January 27th performance will be interpreted for the deaf. The church is accessible.
Also appearing is the Iranian String Ensemble which will join the LGCW to offer “Nava.” Composed by Kazem Davoudian, the piece is a symphonic/choral meditation in Farsi on the many aspects of humanity. This is a reprise of a performance on December 1st at the Kennedy Center.
From the Hebrew folksong “Nations Shall Learn War No More” to the Buddhist mantra “Gate Gate”; from the Irish lament “Johnny We hardly Knew You” to the prayer of St. Francis “Let Me Sow Love” – the program offers a message of hope at the start of a new year and includes testaments to the enduring belief that “peace by piece, we bring this world together.”
Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance ($25 at the door). They are available at www.lgcw.org, from chorus members, and TICKETplace. In addition, complimentary tickets are available for people living with HIV/AIDS, lesbians living with cancer, sexual minority youth, the deaf, and others who cannot easily access the arts. To request a complimentary ticket, call 202-546-1549. Please join us for this musical affirmation of the power of people to build a lasting peace for the world.
