The best musician you've never seen on stage is set to absolve you of that deficiency with a series of concerts this and every Saturday evening throughout the summer. Paul Zunno spent seven years as lead guitarist for Wilson Pickett, whose ear for virtuosity was such that previous holders of the post included Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman. The years and ears since have continued to bring acclamation. Zunno has seen his highly praised recordings licensed for television by producers who, like Pickett, weren't exactly short on options.
On stage, Zunno unleashes the kind of fretwork that ought to be followed by diagrammed, slow-mo replay; and he sings in a voice that will make yours seem stuck in falsetto. There is no minimum drink requirement, but be forewarned: few can resist buying one or all three of Zunno's CDs on their way out the door, where, often enough, the artist himself is available for handshakes and autographs.
The show starts at 8pm and has a running time of 1 hour and 15 minutes with no intermission. The doors open at 7:30pm and seating is general admission.
New York City Center Studios is located in the heart of Manhattan on 56th street between 6th and 7th Avenues. Studio 5 is part of NY City Center, Manhattan's first performing arts center: a New York home for the best of theater, music, and dance.
