Passport Fair at the Oakland Post Office September 30, 2006

In celebration of September as National Passport Month, Lonely Planet is partnering with the Oakland Post Office to host a Passport Fair on Saturday, September 30th from 10am-3pm at the Oakland Main Branch (1675 7th St, Oakland). People can come and apply for their passport at the Oakland Post Office. Lonely Planet staff and guidebook authors will be on-site, offering travel advice and tips, giving away free books and gifts, and generally making the process of standing in line much more entertaining and enjoyable!

According to the State Department, only 25% of Americans have a passport. Lonely Planet believes that international travel is one of the best ways to increase understanding, promote tolerance and help create one planet. Travel is a powerful source of personal enjoyment, enrichment and interest for both the traveler and the host. Travelers can play an important role as ambassadors of their country, helping act as agents of understanding, tolerance and mutual respect as they travel out into the world and connect with other people and cultures. For more than a year, Lonely Planet has been working with Congresswoman Barbara Lee to have September officially declared as National Passport Month and on June 6th, the House of Representatives unanimously passed the resolution.
