February is a time for romance, no matter whether you like to send sweets or tweets to your loved one. So if a history of passion makes you weak in the knees, visit Shirley Plantation in Charles City from February 1 - 14 and learn the 18th century art of courting.
Find out first hand what it was like to date before the age of text messages, social networking, and e-cards. Enjoy stories of old time weddings, courtships, and even pen your own love letter.
When you arrive at Shirley make sure to warm-up your head, heart, and toes with a cup of hot chocolate or warm cider in Lady Cessalye’s Shop. While in the shop, why not surprise your special one by hand writing your own love letter with a quill pen, just as Shirley couples did so many years ago. You may be surprised to know the men wrote very compassionate and tender love letters to their ladies on a regular basis.
During your guided tour, you will hear stories of famous Shirley couples like Anne Hill Carter and Revolutionary War hero Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, who were married in the Great House. You and your loved one can stand in the room where they exchanged their wedding vows. Visitors can also read copies of original letters from Shirley’s archives, including love letters written by notable Virginians such as George Washington and from Carter cousin, Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Valentine’s weekend is the only time these letters are on display.
“Passion on the Plantation” is included at no additional cost. Regular admission to Shirley Plantation is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for AAA members, seniors, and military.
