ABOUT THE FILM
At the turn of the last century, the electric vibrator became a consumer item at the same time as the toaster, and long before the vacuum cleaner.

The hidden history of this simple object is traced in this serious, witty and altogether eye-opening documentary.

This is the movie that kept the Mill Valley Film Festival abuzz, based on the book The Technology of Orgasm: “Hysteria,” the Vibrator and Women’s Sexual Satisfaction by Rachel P. Maines (who appears onscreen), the film traces the origins of the instrument back to the ancient (and now obsolete) concept of female “hysteria.” From images of Victorian doctors who manipulated and controlled their female patients, to the 1970s feminist movement, when the vibrator became a symbol of personal empowerment, it’s a surprising and enlightening story—one that the filmmakers demonstrate is far from finished. In recent years, Texas housewife Joanne Webb was arrested for selling vibrators to other women, and it seems that this innocent little machine remains at the center of issues regarding sexual freedom, civil liberties and the right to privacy.

See the film that actor/comedienne Margaret Cho calls a “…tremendously important and provocative film that uses humor and great insight to illuminate our dark past...I loved it almost as much as I love my vibrator!"
