Abstract:

During the 19th century theatre occupied a central place in the urban culture of large social strata and especially in the capital cities. Based on the book published in 2008, Theatres en capitales. Naissance de la société du spectacle à Paris, Berlin, Londres et Vienne, the lecture will analyze why Parisian theatre was so active and exported its main hits in the other European countries and was an international cultural model in particular in Central Europe.

Brief biography:

CHRISTOPHE CHARLE is professor of modern history at UNIVERSITÉ DE PARIS 1 PANTHÉON SORBONNE. He teaches European comparative history of the 19th and 20th century. He has published mainly on social and cultural history of that period. Author of almost twenty books his more recent publications are: Les intellectuels en Europe au XIXe siècle (1996), la crise des sociétés impériales (1900-1940) (2001, 2è éd., 2008), Le siècle de la presse (1830-1939) (2004), Théâtres en capitales. Naissance de la société du spectacle à Paris, Berlin, Londres et Vienne (1860-1914) (2008). He is preparing a cultural history of Europe in the 19th century and a “brief history of modernity”.
