Christophe Charle (Université de Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne): Paris, Capital City or Spectacle of Europe in the Nineteenth Century? Research on a Spectacle Society of the Past

Abstract:

During the 19th century theatre occupied a central place in the urban culture of large social strata and especially in the capital cities. Based on the book published in 2008, Theatres en capitales. Naissance de la société du spectacle à Paris, Berlin, Londres et Vienne, the lecture will analyze why Parisian theatre was so active and exported its main hits in the other European countries and was an international cultural model in particular in Central Europe.
