Pappa Tarahumara
Ship in a View
WEST COAST PREMIERE
?? devastatingly beautiful?
? The Japan Times
Named after the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico?s Copper Canyon but influenced by an Asian sense of time, motion and lyricism, this Japanese ensemble blends the innovation of modern dance and Japanese opera with the pacing and intense symbolism of ancient Noh theater, capturing the enduring wonder and indescribable beauty in all things. Artistic director Hiroshi Koike creates a beautiful and powerfully evocative milieu, using a town by the sea in the 60s as its motif. A chorus of voices punctuates the scene with longing and nostalgia as a ship slowly crosses the stage, the promise of escape just beyond reach.
