Papa Mau: The Wayfinder recounts the fundamental role that master navigator Mau Piailug played in reawakening Polynesian pride: He taught Hawaiians the dying art of traditional ocean navigation without instruments. By the 1970s, many Hawaiian cultural practices, including traditional navigation, had fallen victim to centuries of Western influence. Determined to reclaim lost Hawaiian identity and pride, a small group of visionaries built a voyaging canoe in the ancient style, with the dream of sailing Hōkūle‘a to Tahiti on the route recounted in oral traditions.
