ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage presents Pan's Labyrinth. Ofelia, a young girl living in the tumultuous landscape of fascist Spain in 1944, finds a refuge from her oppressive military stepfather by reading fairytales. When she discovers a mystical labyrinth controlled by an other-worldly faun, she is pulled into a dark, twisted world that both frightens and intrigues her. The faun sets Ofelia on a quest that promises to save her and her mother. Before long, the lines between fantasy and reality blur, and Ofelia finds herself in the middle of a battle between good and evil rather than the fairytale she had imagined. A fascinating look at child psychology brought to the screen by the bizarre and brilliant mind of writer/director Guillermo Del Toro, this “fairytale for adults” won three Academy Awards for Art Direction, Make-Up and Cinematography.
