This public panel discussion will explore challenges and opportunities in the building of large-scale infrastructures, past and present.

Panelists are four prominent scholars and practitioners of infrastructure: Professor Susan Leigh Star, Center for Science, Technology, and Society, Santa Clara University; Professor JoAnne Yates, Sloan School of Management, MIT; Professor Richard Rood, U-M Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences; and Robert Kahn, president of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives. Professor Geoffrey C. Bowker, Center for Science, Technology, and Society, Santa Clara University, will moderate.

The panel opens the NSF-sponsored workshop, "History and Theory of Infrastructure: Lessons for New Scientific Cyberinfrastructures," hosted by Associate Professor Paul Edwards and Assistant Professor Steven Jackson along with Bowker, a co-principal investigator. The conference runs from September 28-October 1. All members of the SI and broader Michigan community are invited to attend and participate in the public panel discussion. (Due to space constraints, participation in subsequent sections of the workshop is by invitation only.)
