The oasis city of Palmyra, located deep in the Syrian Desert, was always an important trade centre for exotic products coming from the east. Fabulous wealth through trade with the Roman Empire saw the city develop magnificent temples, theatre, baths and stunning tower tombs. A revolt against Roman control in the mid third Century CE, led by Queen Zenobia, was dramatically suppressed and the fortunes of the city subsequently declined. This course explores the history and architecture of this romantic desert city. Details of this event may be subject to change.
