Paintings By Sultana Hasan. Sultana Hasan: For Sultana Hasan painting is viewed in conjunction with her return to India after her long years in Paris . This background makes it possible for her to spontaneously and unconsciously use elements form both these cultures in her art. People on the streets, markets and construction sites provide her inspiration to create her vibrant figurative works. Her protagonists are lost in their own world, contemplating and inward looking. They might be one in a crowd but are in actuality very alone, caught up in their solitude. She has shifted her medium, from acrylic to canvas, as she finds greater possibilities with the acrylic medium, which emulates the feel of oils and retains the translucency of watercolors. She also experiments with techniques of mixed media and printmaking keeping open more avenues for her creativity to flow. Sultana uses colour and space in a dynamic way to create paintings that reflect the duality of her life in the Orient and the Occident. Her colours are a kaleidoscopic fusion of Parisian modernism and an Indian feel for saturated colour and pattern. Using a high keyed palette resonating with sensuality she intuitively handles colour and surface to create an expressionistic exuberance. Her use of space combines surface and depth and evokes responses from that are emotional and arise from the subconscious mind. Combining multiple close-ups of heads she creates dramatic compositions encompassing different moods.
