Paintings by K.G. Subramaniyam. On the occasion of K. G. Subramanyans eighty-fifth birthday, Aakriti Art Gallery along with Seagull Art Foundation & Akar Prakar. K. G. Subramanyan is a multifaceted artist. He is recognized not only as a painter, muralist and a printmaker but also as a scholar and a teacher of art. K. G. Subramanyan has achieved a successful synthesis of Indias linear folk tradition and modernism. His sense of design, especially the manner in which he plays with pictorial space by filling the entire surface with Indian fauna and flora, makes his paintings vibrant and rooted in Indian spirit. In this exhibition, we are showcasing an array of brilliant works done by the artist in 2007-2008. They include 72 paper works, 21 reverse painting on acrylic sheet and 9 canvases. K. G. Subramanyan - K.G. Subramanyan, born in 1924, has had an eminent career as a painter, sculptor, muralist, printmaker, writer and academic A consultant to the Handloom Board in the 1960s, he was later associated with the National Institute of Design. President of the Craft Council of India(1974-76), elected to the World Craft Council(1975), he was a delegate to its Asian Assembly at Sydney(1975) and to its General Assembly at Oaxtepec, Mexico (1976). For two terms, he was Christensen Fellow at St Catherines College, Oxford (1987-88). His works have been widely exhibited in India and outside, and his oeuvre shown together in four retrospective exhibitions at the Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal (1981) at Calcutta (1983) at Delhi (1984,2003). He has been awarded the Medallion of Honorable Mention at the Sao Paulo Biennale(1983), the Gold Medal at the first Indian Triennale(1968); the Padma Srhri by the Government of India (1975), the Kalidas Samman (1981) and the Aban-Gagan Puraskar (1991). He received Honorary D.Litts from the Rabindra Bharati University (1992) and the Benaras Hindu University (1997). Fellow of the National Lalit Kala Akademi and of the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi, he also has also received the Shiromani Puraskar, Calcutta (2000), Lalit Kala Ratna warded by the Lalit Kala Akademi on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee (2004), Lifetime Achievement Award, Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta (2005) and the Padmabhushan by the Government of India (2006). K.G. Subramanyan moved to Santiniketan as Professor of Painting at Kala Bhavan in 1980. On his retirement (1989), he was made Professor Emeritus, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. In 2004, he moved to Baroda where he now lives and works.
