Including art from the late 18th century to the present, the American collection offers examples of many significant subjects and styles as practiced in the United States, such as 19th-century portraiture and landscape and several specialized trends emphasized in the Zimmerli collection, including American art influenced by Surrealism and mid-20th-century painterly abstraction. Among the notable artists represented in the collection are Albert Bierstadt, John Frederick Kensett, Eastman Johnson, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Arthur Dove, Reginald Marsh, Chaim Gross, Jules Olitski and George Segal. American paintings and sculptures are displayed in two major galleries: an American Art gallery devoted to the many historical varieties of American representational art and the Modernist galleries.
