Your adventure of exploring the other 75% of the earth is just around the corner as you get ready
to be certified as a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Open Water Diver.
Your first day will look like this: Upon arrival at the classroom you will be introduced to the
instructor and staff. You will then fill out all forms; anybody under 18 will need to have a parent
sign. You will then be shown the gear you will be using Saturday and Sunday. After a brief
question and answer period about the videos you watched at home and the Knowledge Reviews for
the 5 chapters in your manual, the class will go to the pool for your 200 yard (8 lengths) swim and
10 minute float, used as a water comfort assessment by your instructor.
Saturday and Sunday will be take place in both the class room and pool for skills. The course is
performance based, so a time will be difficult to pinpoint, however, allow about 8 hours per day.
(Length may vary dependant on class size) There are four 10 question quiz's that will check
comprehension level of the material covered and on Sunday there will be a final exam of 50
questions.
This course can earn the participant a college credit via transcript in the Phys Ed section through
the American Council of Education. After the successful completion of your Academic and
Confined Water sections of your training, all that is left is your Open Water Checkout dives! You
will do 4 dives over 2(two) days, using full scuba kit and wetsuit. Upon completion you will be
certified an Open Water diver or Junior Open Water Diver if under 16 years old. It is a life long
certification; all you will have to do now is dive! (Open Water Dives will be scheduled with the
instructor to take place in the spring.)
