Out West: Photographs by Loretta Young-Gautier

The Byers-Evans House Gallery’s January / February show, Out West, features an exhibition of recent works by Denver area photographer Loretta Young-Gautier. This show will open with a reception on Friday, January 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk in the Golden Triangle Museum District. The show will remain on view in the gallery through Saturday, February 23.

Loretta Young-Gautier meticulously crafts her photographs, spending weeks, and at times incorporating as many as ten different negatives to create a single work of art. She integrates western elements into her artistic vision, producing eloquent black and white photographs that transport the viewer into a surreal, yet recognizable, world. In Young-Gautier’s Snowfall, a doe caught in a snowstorm stands alerted by the sudden appearance of the viewer as the rest of the herd scampers soundlessly into the forest. Dust engages the imagination as wild horses energize the horizon, penetrating dense fog and leaving a cloud of dust in their wake. Each photograph is produced as a limited edition of no more than 25 archival silver gelatin or pigment inkjet prints.

Former Associate Director of Hal Gould's venerated Camera Obscura Gallery, Ms. Young-Gautier’s career also includes exhibitions in numerous national group and solo shows, including the prestigious Coors Western Art Show at the National Western Stock Show, and the San Diego Natural History Museum. Her photographs grace private, corporate and museum collections nationwide, such as Great West Life, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Western History Department of the Denver Public Library. She has been published in Photo Review, Icon, Masterpiece Magazine, The Photographers Market, 303 Magazine and Passion Press. A Colorado native, Loretta currently lives in Indian Hills.
