The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is spearheading a community service program called Operation Medicine Cabinet (OMC), aimed at educating and encouraging the community to properly dispose of unwanted prescription medications. Expired and unused prescriptions in the home present a number of real concerns for the community and the Sheriff's Office, according to Rob Thornton, Community Resource Deputy for Sun City Center.

Other concerns include improper disposal in the garbage, which can impact the safety of animals and pets.

The program is also aimed at curbing environmental contamination. Most wastewater treatment plants aren't designed to filter out medicines when they're flushed or put down the drain. In some areas of the country, marine and aquatic life have begun testing positive for medication toxicity.
All medications collected will be taken to a hazardous waste collection site where they will be incinerated.
